Karur is a well known industrial city. Formerly Karur city was within the jurisdiction of Tiruchirapalli city. Karur city is 371Kms away from the state capital of Chennai and 8o kms away from Tiruchirapalli city.  
Karur is known for textile industries like bed linens, kitchen linens, toilet linens, table linens, wall hangings. More industries like dyeing and weaving are around Karur. Karur is also said to be one of the major foreign exchange earner in Tamilnadu through exports from various industries and factories in and around Karur. Major exports from Karur city is Handloom products and other products like Bedspreads, sheet sets, Towels, Floor rugs, Tea towels, Napkins, Aprons, Kitchen towels, Pot holders, Plate mats, Bathmats, Tea mats, Curtains, Pillow, Quilt covers, Shower curtains  to major international countries.
 Major industry in Karur district is the paper mill owned by the Tamilnadu Government and employing many peoples in and around Karur district.
